Guillermo Del Toro's Pinocchio (2022) Plot Synopsis

It is also the darkest. The film begins during the Great War, or World War I as we know it. Geppetto loses his son Carlo in a bomb attack. Years pass and Geppetto remains in the pits of misery. One drunken night he is Pinocchio. That night, a wood sprite arrives and brings him back to life, the cricket charges Sebastian with the task of helping him.

Geppetto sends Pinocchio to school, but instead the boy attends a puppet show by the scheming Count Volpe. Geppetto tries to get Pinocchio back, but the struggle between him and Count Volpe causes the little wooden boy to be thrown into the street and under a car.

In the realm of the dead, Pinocchio finds himself in front of Death. Death tells Pinocchio that he is immortal and can return to the mortal world, but each time he dies he will have to spend a little more time in the underworld. Pinocchio wakes up, safe and sound. But now Count Volpe wants Geppetto to pay ten million lire in exchange for his contract with Pinocchio, and Podesta wants to prepare him for war. When Geppetto gets angry, Pinocchio runs away and joins the puppet show again and sends the winnings to his father.

  What will happen next?

Thanks to Pinocchio, Count Volpe's puppet show is a great success. They travel from city to city, performing as they go. Finally, Volpe has the honor of hosting Italian Prime Minister Benito Mussolini. Volpe's mistreatment of his monkey Spazzatura angers Pinocchio, who in turn is insulted. As a result, the two of them join hands and use their performance to mock Mussolini. The offended prime minister shoots and kills Pinocchio.

Pinocchio meets Death again and is sent back after some time. He wakes up in a truck surrounded by Podestà, his son Candlewick, and several other boys. Podestà takes them all to a training center for young soldiers.

Meanwhile, Geppetto sets off with Sebastian Cricket to search for Pinocchio. While tracking down Count Volpe, they are swallowed by a giant dogfish in the ocean.

What happens at the military training center?

Podestà tries to instill the spirit of war in the boys, but Pinocchio and Candlewick become unlikely friends instead. Enraged, the Podestà orders Candlewick to shoot Pinocchio. Instead, the boys fight with him. When the enemy begins bombing the area, Podestà gets caught in a net in the training area and falls victim to one of the bombs. The explosion throws Pinocchio over the side of the building.

  What happens to Count Wolse?

Unfortunately for Pinocchio, the vengeful Count Volpe finds Pinocchio and ties him to a wooden cross and burns him. But the oppressed Spazzatura stands against his master. He comes to Pinocchio's aid and they throw Volpe off a cliff to his death. Spazzatura and Pinocchio fall into the water, hanging on a piece of wood.

Is Geppetto running from the sea beast?

While swimming in the open sea, Spazzatura and Pinocchio are also swallowed by a dogfish. Inside, Pinocchio is reunited with his father and Sebastian. Sebastian then gives Pinocchio the idea to lie, which causes his nose to grow to the opening of the Dogfish's hole. The other three climb the tall tree, followed by Pinocchio himself.

The dogfish sneezes them all, but gives chase again. Pinocchio then set off a sea mine stuck in the dogfish's teeth, detonating it. The explosion kills Pinocchio again, but this time he begs Death to send him back early because he has to save Geppetto. Death says that this action will make Pinocchio fatal. The boy agrees.

He wakes up at sea and manages to save the drowning Geppetto and bring him to shore. Geppetto wakes up to find Pinocchio dead forever.

Does Pinocchio survive?

The Wood Sprite appears and says that he cannot give Pinocchio his life back. Sebastian then reminds him that he promised him a wish in exchange for guiding Pinocchio. He wishes for Pinocchio to come back to life. The Wood Sprite agrees and Pinocchio comes back to life.

  How does Pinocchio end?

Pinocchio, Geppetto, Sebastian and Spazzatura all live happily together. Over time, Geppetto grows old and dies. He is soon followed by Sebastian and Spazzatura, and Pinocchio never gets old. Sebastian's story reveals Pinocchio going out into the world in search of new adventures. He says that Pinocchio might actually die one day and that makes him a real boy. He concludes by asserting, “What happens, happens. And then we left."

  Is there a mid-credits scene?

Yes, indeed. The mid-credits scene shows Sebastian sitting with the four rabbits of the underworld. He would tell them the story as they played cards.
