Alice In Borderland Season 1
Episode No 3 Recap And Review
In the uneasy quiet of an apartment complex, Episode 3 of Alice on the Border opens with Arisu morally conflicted after killing a tagger. Usagi gives him some words of encouragement before leaving the stage.
Meanwhile, Saori Shibuki realizes that she has been in this game for 5 days now and her visa is about to expire, she needs to act fast. She is sad about her new found life and thinks about how she has to sleep with her superiors just to get a promotion.
However, his thoughts are interrupted by the return of Arisu and Karube, who talk to the others about a radio broadcast and an ominous message about returning to shore.
With a new game coming up that evening, the team agrees to work together and do their best to come out on top. Arisu ponders as they agree with Usagi's earlier words, especially when she mentions that she would do anything to survive.
Karube returns to the bar and finds the ring box hidden behind some alcohol bottles on the top shelf. He was saving it for his lover, and as he held it, the night was drawing near and waiting for a new game. In a bad way with Chota, the group agrees to stay together for what may lie ahead.
This is easier said than done as the kids head to the botanical garden for their new assignment. Two whiteboards have numerous tools that are free to use.
Once you've chosen what to use, the other table comes down to sports googles that appear as part of a VR game. Exciting big band music plays as the kids check in, and when they put on the goggles, the game is ready to begin.
It's pretty impressive technology, but they soon learn that the game they're supposed to be participating in (7 hearts) is a deadly hide-and-seek game, where one of them is a wolf and the others are sheep. Whoever is the monster in the end wins. The remaining 3 lambs will find their collars burst and die later.
Chota is the first monster to figure out that only one will survive and they have 15 minutes to figure it out. Looking directly at another player alters the monster's power, Shibuki is the first to realize this and heads off to hide while creating a monster.
Karube follows him, eventually ending up with a duel. Karube becomes a monster, but as things get more intense, Arisu gains strength and does her best to remove the collar.
As time passes, flashbacks to Arisu's past reveal her unwavering friendship with both Chota and Karube. Arisu decides to quit the game and not fight for her life, begging the others to take the power from her.
He makes an impassioned plea to his friends, but they are too busy hiding. With the last seconds left, Arisu finds Karube but runs out of time. His collar explodes and he suddenly dies in front of Arisu. Although we don't see it directly, the blood splattered on the ground suggests that both Chota and Shibuki met a gruesome end.
Episode Review
Wow, what a shocking ending! It was certainly surprising to see Arisu's friends all die at the end, and I thought the rules of this game would be changed. I thought that the game master lied and caused the wolf to die and the sheep to survive, and in the end Shibuki became a wolf and died.
When Chota and Karube both die, it certainly ups the ante for the rest of the episodes. However, it feels a little disappointing that we don't get to see a bit more of either of these characters.
Still, in terms of sci-fi and shocking revelations, Alice In Borderland has been a fascinating watch so far, and it remains to be seen what happens next.
